An important chapter in the history of Rhodes and the Dodecanese is about to come to life through the new book *Rhodes and the Dodecanese Through the Eyes of Gabriel Misios*, by Rhodian author and researcher Kyriakos Hondros, which is now in the final stages of preparation, with the goal of publishing it in the coming months.
At the heart of the project lies the extensive Gabriel Misiou Family Archive, containing unique documents, correspondence, publications, photographs, and historical artifacts that shed light on sports, historic clubs, education, social and political life, journalism, and daily life throughout an entire era.
Part of the family archive has been donated to the General State Archives—Rhodes Branch. The collaboration with the Rhodes General State Archives, and particularly with their Director, Ms. Irini Tolio, has made a valuable contribution to the documentation, preservation, and promotion of this important historical material.
Gabriel Misios (1902–1968) was a prominent figure in Dodecanese society, a pillar of sports, a journalist and columnist, and a man dedicated to social service and collective action. During the difficult years of Italian occupation, he fought for Greek sports, education, and the preservation of Greek identity—efforts for which he was even exiled.
The creation of this new book is an initiative of Gabriel Misios’s grandson, Nektarios G. Misios, as part of the “Gabriel Misios Initiative,” who has undertaken the financing, organization, and overall coordination of the project.
He entrusted the research and writing to the renowned Rhodian author and researcher Kyriakos Chondros, who has devoted many years to the modern history of Rhodes and the Dodecanese.
His deep knowledge of the local historical context, his research experience, and his systematic study of a particularly rich body of family and archival documents formed the basis for the creation of a significant work that seeks not only to chronicle the life and deeds of GaVriel Misios, but also to shed light, through his life story, on important and lesser-known aspects of the history of Rhodes and the Dodecanese.
This effort will continue even after publication, through the use of historical material in digital and audiovisual content, as part of the broader efforts of the Gabriel Misios Initiative to highlight the historical and cultural heritage of Rhodes and the Dodecanese.
The Gabriel Misios Initiative
