On Wednesday, September 30, at 7:00 p.m., the Rhodes Municipal Theater opens its doors for the play “With a Suitcase,” a unique social comedy filled with twists, laughter, emotion, and powerful messages.
The plot is based on the stories of everyday characters and aims not merely to remind us of the problems of contemporary Greek society, but to encourage us to face adversity armed with humor, hope, and optimism.
Audiences follow the lives of people living right next to us. A man addicted to financial news and gambling who, indifferent to his personal life and happiness, numbs himself by constantly watching the news. An immigrant who sells roses and shows that, despite his background, the color of his skin, and the insults he faces every day, he harbors within him a soul that feels, loves, and suffers. A former big name in the music scene who lived his dream and now speaks the greatest truths.
These and many others are brought to life by the inventive actors who worked with passion, not primarily to remind us of the myriad problems facing modern Greeks, but to encourage them, through laughter, to face their difficulties with greater strength, optimism, hope, defiance, and humor. While everyone wants us to be passive and submissive and tells each of us to “Shut up,” these young artists come along and shout “Speak up!” Furthermore, they don’t forget to list, with a strong sense of patriotism, the countless reasons why we should be proud as Greeks, emphasizing that our country united the entire world with a single flame!
