The University of the Aegean’s Experimental Junior High School of Rhodes is organizing the “ASTROLABS” Festival of Science and Astrophysics, a two-day journey into the world of science, astrophysics, and space, on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, 2026. This event brings the school community together with scientific research, with the goal of inspiring students to observe, experiment, create, ask questions, and explore.
The two-day program includes the following activities:
Friday, October 23, 2026 (Rhodes Experimental Junior High School)
- 9:00–10:00 a.m.: Lecture and meeting with Ioannis D. Danglis, with the school’s students, during which they will discuss space, research, and modern science. At the same time, the Association for the Dissemination of the Physical Sciences (SYDIFE) will inform students about its activities and the SciYouth Talks@Rhodes event.
- 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Welcome reception for students from other schools in Rhodes. The school will be transformed into a large science lab with seven themed stations featuring hands-on and participatory activities:
- 1) 3… 2… 1… Launch! (Rocket Building): We design, build, and test our own rocket.
- 2) Touch the Universe (Augmented Reality): Space comes to life right before our eyes.
- 3) Dancing with the Stars (Music and Movement Game): Space becomes movement, rhythm, and play.
- 4) Painting the Universe (Astronomical Painting): When astronomy meets art.
- 5) Rover: Mission to Mars (Space Robotics): We program our robot for a space mission.
- 6) Math in Orbit (Mathematics and Space): We calculate, predict, and solve the mysteries of the Universe.
- 7) Life in Orbit (Molecular Biology and Space Chemistry): Can life travel through space?
Saturday, October 24, 2026 (University of the Aegean Events/Multipurpose Hall)
- 6:00 p.m.: Keynote address by Professor Ioannis D. Daglis titled “Bridges to the Universe: From Astrophysics to Life.”
The Rhodes Laboratory Center for Physical Sciences (EKFE), headed by Ms. Christina Angelidi, is also participating in the festival. The event is held with the support of the Mitsis Group.
