A fight between a bride and her mother-in-law is a different kind of beast, even if it’s said that “a bride, from the moment she’s born, resembles her mother-in-law.” That’s when all the deep-seated grudges come out.<\/p>\n
Then there’s the macho bravado that takes center stage when two young men fight over a beauty. Before you know it, they’re at each other’s throats. As they say, “all hell breaks loose.”<\/p>\n
The old-timers will remember the fights that used to happen at Symi’s festivals; the reasons were many: “They didn’t give him a table in the place of honor…” “The musicians played an extra song for that one captain…” “The coffee maker was slow to serve them…” I remember chairs and beer bottles flying over our heads… like rockets.<\/p>\n
But if you happen upon a neighborhood quarrel, just wait… all hell breaks loose… they pull each other’s hair over nothing. One woman says to the other, “she’s praised, and yet they still fight without any damage.” “With the world’s slander,” she says, “the world will slander him back.”<\/p>\n
We have the most magnificent fights in Symi whenever there are elections. You go to talk to one person, and the other turns their back on you. If you’re really unlucky and are running for communal elder… just wait… just like that time during the 1955 elections for Symi’s eldership with candidates: Koumnenis Pantikas and Elenia tou Harouppa… LIKE CATS AND DOGS…<\/b><\/p>\n
