Blood supplies in August are becoming even more critical

Now is the time to make a difference

On August 3, let’s all meet at the General Hospital of Rhodes, for a large-scale volunteer blood drive organized by the Blood Donation Department of the General Hospital of Rhodes, with the goal of boosting our hospital’s blood supply.

August is the month when Rhodes is bustling with life. The streets are filled with people, the beaches are full of smiles, and businesses are operating at a brisk pace. At the same time, however, behind the hospital’s doors, the need for blood is increasing, while available supplies are dwindling at an alarming rate.

It’s a reality that usually remains unseen. We only realize it when we’re faced with it.

No one wakes up in the morning thinking they’ll need blood later that day. And yet, a car accident, a difficult surgery, a hemorrhage, or a serious illness can turn everything upside down in a matter of minutes. At that moment, you’re not looking for a hero. You’re looking for a stranger who, one day, took a few minutes out of their time without knowing whom they would be helping.

That is the true volunteer blood donor.

They don’t give because a relative or friend is in need. They don’t wait for adversity to knock on their own door. They choose to be there before anyone needs them.

Our society needs more people like this. Not tomorrow. Today.

The strength of an organized society is not measured solely by its infrastructure or technology. It is measured by the willingness of its people to support one another, without expecting anything in return, without knowing each other’s faces or names.

Blood cannot be bought. It cannot be produced in any laboratory, nor can it be replaced by any medication. It exists only when someone decides to donate it, even before the need arises.

That is why donating blood is not merely an act of generosity. It is an act of foresight and social responsibility. It is the precious reserve of life that we all create together for a moment that no one can predict.

The blood drive will take place in the clinic’s lobby from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the invitation is extended to every healthy citizen—residents of Koskinou, residents of the wider area, workers in Asgouros and the surrounding areas, as well as anyone who can spare a few minutes of their time for a cause that concerns us all.

We’re not asking for a great sacrifice.

We’re asking for a small decision that could become the greatest hope for someone we don’t know today, but whose life may depend on it tomorrow.

Let’s not let blood supplies become just another statistic in a press release. Let’s make them proof that the community of Rhodes knows how to take preventive action, show compassion, and stand by our fellow human beings when needed.

On August 3, let’s all be there.

Because life doesn’t wait for us to find the time.

It only waits for us to make a decision.
