A global competition for the language of image and sound
The “Preisner Scoring Competition,” organized by the Municipal Cultural Center and the City of Bielsko-Biała (Bielsko-Biała), Poland, under the artistic direction of the renowned film composer Zbigniew Preisner, aims to showcase and support young creators by bringing them into direct contact with the professional environment of the film and music industries.
In this second edition, the challenge focuses on the inseparable relationship between image and sound: contestants are invited to compose original music for a short film created by Preisner himself. The maestro himself entrusted the task of selecting the finalists to a distinguished panel, in which Antonis Kyzoulis serves on the preliminary selection committee alongside violinist Radosław Pujanek, the renowned music journalist Paweł Sztompke, and conductor Karol Szwech. The competition’s final jury includes world-renowned figures such as Oscar-winning composer Gabriel Yared, film historian Anette Insdorf, leading sound engineer Geoff Foster, and director Petr Zelenka.
Antonis Kyzoulis: The Melodic Voice of the Aegean on the International Stage
Born in Rhodes, where he resides permanently, Antonis Kyzoulis is one of the most substantial and quietly influential composers of his generation. With a rich body of work ranging from theater and orchestral music to song cycles, choral works, and music for the performing arts, his aesthetic has left an indelible mark on the cultural life of the Dodecanese and the Greek provinces.
His music, deeply lyrical, narrative, and at the same time contemporary, engages in a timeless dialogue with poetry and drama. He has received awards at the Thessaloniki Festival, and his song cycle—featuring poems by Cavafy set to music and performed by the distinguished mezzo-soprano Betty Charlafti— was recorded by the ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra and broadcast on the Second Program. His selection as a member of the jury for the “Preisner Scoring Competition” confirms that his art transcends geographical boundaries and rightfully holds its place at the heart of European symphonic and cinematic creation.
Zbigniew Preisner: The Genius of Melancholy and a Love for Greece
At the helm of the festival is the legendary Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner, one of the most important film music composers in the history of the Seventh Art. He gained worldwide fame through his historic collaboration with director Krzysztof Kieślowski, composing masterpieces such as “The Decalogue,” “The Double Life of Veronika,” and the iconic “Three Colors” trilogy (“Blue,” “White,” “Red”), as well as the monumental “Requiem for My Friend.”
For decades, Preisner has maintained a deep personal connection with Greece, and particularly with Rhodes, where he spends long periods of his life, drawing inspiration from the island’s light and history. The meeting between this world-renowned composer and Antonis Kyzoulis as part of the competition underscores these invisible yet powerful cultural ties that unite people with a shared vision for art.
The presence of this Rhodian artist on the jury of the international competition is an honor for Greek literature and the arts, proving that Greek musical thought possesses the power and influence to evaluate and guide the future of global film music.
