The Municipality of Rhodes is holding on Friday 25 July 2025 at 21.00 in the courtyard of the Palace of the Grand Master an event in tribute to the theatrical music composed by Manos Hadjidakis for Karolos Koun and the Art Theatre with the Rhodian musician Filippos Tsalauchouris.
It is a historical retrospective of such masterpieces as The Blood Wedding, The Desire Bus, The Hornets, Orpheus & Eurydice, etc., which were performed at the Art Theatre under the direction of Karolos Koun. The music of these performances was loved by the audience and deeply influenced the development of theatre music, and not only, for decades. Even today, the way Manos Hadjidakis musically arranged these texts is a reference. The composer Philippos Tsalachouris worked at the Karolos Koun Art Theatre for fifteen years. During this experience-filled artistic period, he studied the music of Hadjidakis while at the same time collaborating with him. Through study and personal testimonies, this musical journey through the performances in which Hatzidakis and Koun collaborated emerged. Philip Tsalachouris tells the audience the historical context of each performance, performs the music on the piano and sings the wonderful songs. The tour includes references to the cast, actors, historical events, etc.
The event is part of the centenary of the birth of Manos Hadjidakis, 1925 – 2025. This evening with knowledge and deep emotion is an offer by Philip Tsalachouris to the public of Rhodes, a tribute to his acquaintance with Manos Hadjidakis, a tribute to his service at the Art Theatre.
Philip Tsalachouris is a composer and director of the Music Schools of the Athens Conservatory. He has composed 150 works that have been performed in more than twenty countries by leading ensembles and performers. He has been awarded by the Academy of Athens and honoured by the Municipality of Rhodes with the Silver Medal of the City of Rhodes.
