On Monday, September 14, 2026, the Rhodes Lions Club will hold, as it does every year, its traditional celebration at the Cross of Filerimos in Ialysos, Rhodes.
At 5 p.m. that same day, Club President L. Mentos Zoannou invites members and friends of the Club to attend the bread-breaking ceremony, honoring the historical and symbolic significance of the monument, which stands as a timeless landmark for Rhodes and a symbol of Christianity, Love, and Freedom.
The first Filerimos Cross was inaugurated on September 14, 1934. However, in 1941, during the Italian occupation, it was demolished by the Italian administration of the time.
The Rhodes Lions Club, out of respect for the history and cultural heritage of the area, took the initiative in 1992 to rebuild the Cross. The project was completed in 1995, at a total cost of approximately 80,000 euros.
The monument underwent further repair and maintenance work in 2015 to preserve it and ensure it remains an important and popular attraction in Filerimos.
For the Rhodes Lions Club, the Cross of Filerimos is more than just a monument. It is a structure with special historical and symbolic significance, inextricably linked to the Club’s presence and contributions to the local community.
