President Susanna Kardoulia and the Board of Directors of the Museum of Modern Greek Art of the Municipality of Rhodes present the group exhibition “Points of Contact,” curated and with text by Dr. Kostas Prapoglou, the Museum’s Artistic Director. Twelve contemporary artists engage in a dialogue with selected works from the permanent collection, reexamining the relationship between cultural memory, personal experience, and contemporary visual art.
The exhibition emerged from the first of three open calls announced by the Museum earlier in 2026. Participants were asked to select a work from the permanent collection and develop their own creative response. Each pairing arose from a particular attraction, a formal affinity, a spiritual resonance, or a deliberate divergence. Works from different eras converge through unpredictable paths, as art history returns to contemporary creation as memory, inspiration, and unconscious knowledge.
Painting, drawing, photography, collage, sculpture, and kinetic installations develop new interpretations of identity, the body, love, decay, social memory, individuality, and the unseen tensions of human relationships. These contemporary works are presented alongside pieces by Giorgos Bouzianis, Opys Zouni, Kyriakos Mortarakos, Lili Arlioti, Yannis Gaitis, Emmanouil Zepos, Nikos Engonopoulos, Giorgos Lambrou, and Maria Papadimitriou, as well as a historical copperplate engraving of the Colossus of Rhodes from the York Collection.
Contact is conceived as a moment of mutual transformation. The contemporary gesture influences the way we reexamine the historical work, while the collection fuels new forms of artistic inquiry. Time takes on a porous texture, allowing distant creative acts to recognize one another through the visitor’s experience.
Through “Points of Contact,” the Museum broadens the sphere of study, production, and public exchange surrounding its collection. The museum’s heritage offers starting points for rupture, shift, and invention, while younger generations are invited to develop their own language with awareness, freedom, and boldness. The encounter continues in the visitor’s memory, beyond the physical duration of the exhibition. Heritage gains a future every time a new perspective dares to reinterpret it.
