With additional funding of 266,960 euros, the initiative to equip schools in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese with cutting-edge technologies is being bolstered
The South Aegean Region has secured new funding of 266,960.00 euros have been secured by the Region of South Aegean to support the initiative aimed at modernizing the technological equipment in the Region’s schools, bringing its total budget to 3,845,690.00 euros.
By decision of the Regional Governor of the South Aegean, George Hatzimarkos, the project “ICT Equipment for Primary and Secondary Education Facilities in the Region of South Aegean,” which is being implemented under the “South Aegean” Program 2021–2027, and its total budget has now been set at 3,845,690 euros, up from 3,578,730 euros.
Specifically, the project involves upgrading and enhancing the technological and educational equipment of primary and secondary schools in the Region, in order to meet the modern educational needs arising within the context of a digitally transformed and innovative educational system.
The initiatives focus on supporting new curricula, strengthening skills workshops, with an emphasis on 21st-century digital skills such as digital communication, creativity, critical thinking, and online safety, as well as on promoting digital culture and the digital transformation of educational institutions.
Particular emphasis is placed on schools operating in Educational Priority Zones and in remote areas. In addition, the initiative includes strengthening the resilience of distance and online education, as well as implementing innovative educational approaches and pilot projects, with priority given to Model and Experimental schools.
The procurement of equipment includes, among other things, ICT equipment (such as servers, computers, printers, headphones, etc.) to 571 schools in the Regional Units of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, the procurement and installation of interactive devices in 219 preschools and the creation of virtual and augmented reality labs, which constitute innovative interventions in the educational process, in 207 school units.
In detail, the project provides for the procurement of:
- 204 3D printers,
- 102 3D scanners,
- 48 virtual reality (VR) headsets,
- 19 computer labs with seven (7) workstations each,
- 1,198 desktop computers,
- 11 laptops,
- 834 wireless access points, and
- 234 interactive devices for preschools.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and implemented by the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports.
The Regional Governor of the South Aegean, George Hatzimarkos, stated:

We are investing 3.85 million euros in European funds, so that students and teachers in 571 schools across the Cyclades and the Dodecanese have access to modern digital tools. “For the opportunities every child deserves, on every island.”
