On Saturday, October 17, EFTHITA — the Rhodes Road Safety Observatory — organized the “European Night Without Accidents” event in the city center for the 21st consecutive year.
The initiative began in Belgium in 1995 by Responsible Young Drivers and has been a pan-European event since 2003. In Rhodes, it has been organized by E.Y.TH.Y.T.A. since 2005; the city was the first in Greece to participate in the event, in collaboration with Responsible Young Drivers. The event takes place every year on the third Saturday of October, with the goal of informing and raising public awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
In collaboration with the Rhodes Traffic Police Department, EYTHYTA volunteers spoke with citizens and groups of friends, urging them to designate a designated driver in advance. Those who wished to do so could take a free breathalyzer test, while the designated driver wore a special wristband, committing to not consume alcohol throughout the evening.
The campaign’s central message is that “alcohol and driving don’t mix.” Choosing a designated driver or a safe way home is a simple decision that can save lives. If we drink, we don’t drive. We choose a designated driver and everyone gets home safely.
E.Y.TH.Y.T.A. Rhodes extends its warmest thanks to the Rhodes Traffic Police Department for their cooperation, SYFAK, as well as the stores Bahar, Myga, To Kentrikon, Avli, Th Eros, and Sergios for their support and contribution to spreading the message of this campaign.
