Buoyed by rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, it continues its summer journey for the second year in a row: Sophocles’ “Antigone, directed by Themis Moumoulidis.

The production, which was seen by more than 50,000 spectators last summer, continues to stand out with consecutive sold-out performances. Shortly before the curtain falls [on September 9 at the Lycabettus Theater], it will be presented for one night only in Rhodes, on Tuesday, August 25, at the Medieval Moat Theater.

Starring Lena Papaligoura as Antigone, Meletis Ilias as Creon, and Michalis Oikonomou as the Guardthis seminal tragedy—more relevant than ever—is being staged in a fresh new production, seeking to shed new light, through Sophocles’ words, on the eternal questions of freedom, justice, and individual responsibility in the face of authority.

The Play

The war is over. The dead are gathered under the harsh glare of the spotlights. The battlefield is transported to the polished offices of modern decision-making centers. The harsh, amplified sound of today and the fragile breath of the living voice, the immaculate suits and the rags, the mechanized and the desecrated bodies—all compose a world where conflicts intensify and contradictions deepen. The struggle over the funeral ritual becomes the driving force behind the revelation of the relationship between power and death: a resounding indictment of totalitarianism, which usurps power to exercise every right over human existence, even beyond death. A power that tramples on every notion of humanity, producing and reproducing submission as the measure of normality.

In contemporary life, Antigone is present in the overcrowded hot spots, in the detention centers, at the electrified borders, and in the seas that drown. She is present in the ever-expanding grave-camps for the living, in the physical and virtual manifestations of successive layers of confinement, in the games of biopolitics, in the strongholds and ambushes of death. Antigone’s “NO” stands as the ultimate affirmation.
