The Museum of Modern Greek Art of the Municipality of Rhodes is expanding its collection and strengthening its outreach through a systematic policy of accepting new donations. During the tenure of President Susanna Kardoulia, this direction is part of the Museum’s broader artistic and museological vision, strengthening its relationship with artists, donors, and the public.
The systematic expansion of the collection through new donations developed gradually during Kostas Prapoglou’s tenure as Chair of the Artistic Committee and continues to this day. In collaboration with the Chair and the Board of Directors, this policy serves to continuously renew the collection and foster meaningful relationships of trust with individuals who recognize the Museum’s public role and choose to be part of its future.
This new section of donations includes works by the following artists: Minos Orfanou (son of the late Lambros Orfanou and Elli Mourelu–Orfanou), Michalis Katzourakis, Athanasios Spiliopoulos, Nefeli Masia, Efstratia Machairidi, Charalambos and Anna Machairidi, Maria Ziaka, Georgia Christana, and Susan Daboll. These additions introduce diverse visual languages, artistic lineages, and ways of understanding contemporary art, broadening the collection’s historical and stylistic scope.
Through these donations, the permanent collection continues to evolve. Each new work alters its internal relationships, creates new juxtapositions, and allows existing works to be viewed from different perspectives. The collection remains vibrant and open to the passage of time and the shifts in artistic thought. It preserves its memory, embraces the present, and documents new concerns and forms of expression.
Donations link private gestures to public memory and place the works within a broader social and historical context. At the same time, they strengthen the Museum’s ability to develop new exhibitions, research, and educational initiatives, fostering a meaningful relationship with the public of Rhodes and the contemporary artistic community.
The donation policy will be the focus of the upcoming major permanent exhibition, which will be presented at the Nestorideion Melathron in December. With the theme “The Museum Through Its Donations,” the exhibition will reexamine the history and evolution of the collection through the acts of generosity that have shaped it over time. Recent donations will be integrated into a broader museological narrative, shedding light on how each act of giving acquires public significance and contributes to the shaping of cultural memory.
The Museum of Modern Greek Art of the Municipality of Rhodes extends its warmest thanks to the artists and donors for their generosity and trust. This effort continues, with new collaborations and donations already underway.
