The bid to host the 19th World Congress of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities Organization in 2028 was decided by a single vote, during the proceedings held in Marrakesh. Rhodes made it to the final three alongside other great historic cities, with Dubrovnik receiving 19 votes to Rhodes’ 18.
In a social media post, Rhodes Mayor Alexandros Koliadis referred to this effort, noting: “The final decision was not what we had hoped for, but we remain proud of our Rhodes and grateful for the respect we received.”
The mayor emphasized that a truly hard-fought battle took place in Marrakesh and noted that the outcome of the vote alone demonstrates just how highly the island is regarded. At the same time, he expressed his warm congratulations to Dubrovnik on its selection, wishing it every success in hosting the 2028 event and emphasizing that Rhodes will be there as a friend and partner.
As Mr. Kolias noted, it is natural to feel a bit of disappointment, as the preparations were based on great faith in the project; however, the city’s image and the respect it received from representatives of cities from every corner of the globe leave a sense of pride. The Mayor of the Municipality of Rhodes thanked the municipal officials for their outstanding work, as well as the citizens for their positive energy and support throughout these days, assuring them that the journey toward Rhodes’ progress continues with determination and an even greater drive to work.
