The Rhodes International Center for Writers and Translators, part of the Department of Education and Youth of the Municipality of Rhodes, is participating in the celebration of the 2026 European Cultural Heritage Days and, based on this year’s theme “Heritage at Risk: Revitalization, Resilience, Reflection,” is organizing a three-day event featuring creative writing and cultural heritage activities titled “Ink on the Walls—The City (Re)writes Its History.”
The event will take place on Friday, the 25th, Saturday, the 26th, and Sunday, the 27th of September, and includes experiential workshops on creative and expressive writing, as well as themed walks through parts of the city connected to its tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The initiative approaches cultural heritage as a living tapestry of places, memory, experiences, and human stories, highlighting not only what is in danger of being lost physically, but also what is quietly fading from collective memory.
Friday, September 25 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.
Introductory Session – “What Is Cultural Heritage?”
In the event hall of the International Center for Writers and Translators of Rhodes (10A Antiploiarchou Laskou, Monte Smith), the three-day event begins with a discussion and brief experiential writing exercises focusing on tangible and intangible cultural heritage and its relationship to personal and collective memory.
Saturday, September 26 | 4:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.
Urban walk & creative writing workshop – “The Changing City”
The second day takes place in the urban space, starting at the former Metropol Cinema and following a route through parts of modern Rhodes connected to the city’s cultural life and collective memory. The event concludes at the Acropolis Café, in the Ancient Stadium area, where a creative writing workshop will be held on the city’s stories and new possibilities.
Sunday, September 27 | 4:00–7:00 p.m.
Walk & Creative Writing Workshop – “Discovering the Layers of History and Myself”
The third day begins at the entrance to “Sound and Light” and follows a route through the Moat, the fortifications, and the Medieval City, ending at the Park’s Refreshment Stand. The walls and fortifications serve as a catalyst for a personal exploration of memory, boundaries, what we protect, and what we choose to leave behind. The event concludes with a creative writing and poetry therapy workshop, inspired by C. P. Cavafy’s poem “Walls.”
